Handmade in Porto: inside Nyra Atelier
A quiet look inside Nyra Atelier in Porto: the hands that make each piece, the slow pace of the work, and how every wall piece reaches you.
In this story
Nyra Atelier is a small art and décor atelier in Porto, Portugal, where every piece is made by one pair of hands. If you have been looking for handmade home decor in Portugal that is shaped by texture and process rather than by a production line, this is an invitation to see how the work happens, from the first thread to the moment a box leaves the atelier.
Those hands belong to Sónia Bizarro, the founder and maker. You will see them in our photographs and videos, and the attention stays on the work: the tension of a cord, the direction of a stitch, the way wool catches the light.
Handmade home decor in Portugal, one pair of hands at a time
Each wall piece begins and ends in the atelier in Porto: the materials are chosen, the composition is planned, the piece is made by hand and then prepared for its journey to you.
This keeps the atelier small, and that is the point. A piece made this way carries the decisions of one person from start to finish. Each wall piece is made once.
If you would like to know more about how the atelier came to be, you can read our story.
The materials: wool, canvas, cord and wood
Nyra Atelier works with materials that ask to be touched. Wool thread with a soft, slightly matte surface. Canvas stretched taut over a wooden frame. Cotton-rich cord that falls heavily and settles into folds. Natural wood that keeps the irregular line of the branch it once was.
These materials behave differently in the hand, and each one sets its own rhythm. Wool needs patience so that every stitch sits at the same depth. Cord needs space and weight to drape properly. Canvas needs to stay tight and even so that the lines on its surface read clearly from across a room.
Thread on canvas
Some pieces are embroidered or stitched directly onto stretched canvas. Cadence is one of them: 100% wool thread hand-embroidered on stretched canvas over a sturdy wooden frame, reinforced at the back. Its vertical lines in red, mustard, olive green and dusty pink shift tone mid-row against a clean white ground, so the whole surface reads a little like a musical score.
Andante follows a similar language at a slower tempo. Four rows of short lines in chestnut, caramel and cream wool are hand-stitched on canvas covered in a cotton-and-wool fabric. Its name comes from music, where andante means a walking pace, and the piece can hang horizontally or vertically.
Cord and branch
Macramé brings a different kind of presence. Suspenso Terra is 170 cm wide, with three draped panels of cord moving from deep brown through caramel to soft taupe and grey. The panels hang from a long natural wooden branch, tied with knotted rope at each end. It weighs about 2 kg and is signed by Sónia Bizarro.
Slow making, and why it matters
Slow making is not a slogan at Nyra Atelier. It is simply how the work has to be done when one person makes everything by hand.
A line of stitches cannot be hurried without the tension changing. A knot tied too quickly sits differently from the one beside it. Colour shifts in a row of thread happen because the hand decides, stitch by stitch, where one tone ends and another begins. These are small decisions, made hundreds of times in a single piece.
The result is a surface with depth. Up close you can follow the path of the thread. From further away the piece settles into rhythm and colour. That double reading, near and far, is what we hope you will live with.
Why each wall piece is one of a kind
Every wall piece at Nyra Atelier is one of a kind. When a piece is sold, that exact piece does not exist anywhere else.
This is not a marketing device. It comes from the way the work is made. Even when two pieces share a palette or a structure, the hand never repeats itself exactly. Thread lies a little differently, cord falls into its own folds, and a branch has its own length and curve.
So when you choose a piece from the wall art collection, you are choosing that particular piece, with its particular marks of making. The piece you see in the photographs is the piece that will arrive.
Living with a handmade piece
Textile and fibre pieces are happiest away from direct sun and humidity. For macramé such as Suspenso Terra, care is simple: shake it gently or dust it with a soft, dry brush, and do not wash it. Because of its weight, it hangs on two wall hooks, which are not included, so choose hooks suited to the weight and to your wall type.
Canvas pieces are lighter and easier to place. Cadence, for example, measures 59 × 49 cm (23 × 19 in) and weighs 616 g.
