What makes a housewarming gift people keep

Candles burn down and plants need a confident gardener. A gift that stays has three qualities: it does not need to be used up, it is easy to place, and it says something about the person who chose it. Handmade pieces have a fourth: no one else at the party will bring the same thing.

Before you choose, think about two practical questions. How big are their walls, and do they rent? A large wall piece is a generous gift for a couple with a long living-room wall and an awkward one for someone in a studio flat. A shelf piece or a gift card works almost anywhere.

A crochet piece from The Nyra Bunny Family, 39,90 €

Each bunny in The Nyra Bunny Family is crocheted entirely by hand in cotton yarn, with soft polyester filling and a face embroidered in thread, with no glued-on or plastic parts. There are six siblings, each with a name and a look of their own. Mia, the petite one, is about 28.5 cm tall; the other five are about 37 cm, ears included, and most have an outfit that comes off and goes back on.

Cadence is a canvas embroidered by hand in wool yarn: four rows of vertical stitches in red, mustard, olive green and dusty pink that shift tone along the line against a clean white ground. Up close you see every thread; from across the room it reads like a musical score.

Suspenso Terra is the gift for a home with a big empty wall. Three draped panels of cord, from deep brown through caramel to soft taupe and grey, hang from a natural wooden branch, about 170 cm wide, with the longest cords falling about 100 cm. Japandi and neutral

Between 23 November and 24 December, each piece is prepared within 3 to 5 business days. Shipping is free on orders from 35 € to mainland Portugal and mainland Spain, and from 60 € to Madeira, the Azores, the Balearic Islands and Europe Zone 1; the free-shipping amounts for other destinations are in our shipping policy.
